Meet Will Menday, Factory Foreman at our timber frame panel-making facility on Thorn Business Park.
Will is factory foreman on the afternoon shift at our Thorn factory in Hereford where he supervises the production of timber frame panels. He has been with the company for four years, having joined as a factory operative on the day shift. With ambition and drive, Will is keen to make the most of every opportunity…
Q: Do you have a background in construction?
I’d done a bit of labouring on building sites at weekends, but nothing serious. I was a lifeguard prior to starting at Taylor Lane!
Q: You’d no relevant qualifications or skills so why did you apply?
My friend recommended Taylor Lane to me. She knew I was looking for a job, one with career prospects, and knowing a few people who worked here, she suggested getting in touch. I did some research online and thought it looked like an interesting business; I wanted to find out more.
Q: You started as a factory operative before being approached to join the new afternoon shift as Factory Foreman, what made you say yes?
The management team know that I want to progress and that I will grab any opportunity that comes my way. I am already experienced in all areas of the Thorn factory – I can use every machine and drive every vehicle, so this feels like the logical next step. I can also make the most of training and personal development opportunities.
Q: I understand you’ve recently completed the Institute of Leadership & Management Level 3 course, congratulations. How has this influenced the way you work?
I manage a team of 18, including two team leaders. I am also younger than most. The ILM course has given me the tools to manage the team with confidence. They’re responsive and respectful which is so rewarding. I’m keen to do more courses and build my skillset. I love problem solving too so I’d like to explore roles in contracts or onsite, maybe. I don’t know, but it’s good to know that if I want to try something new then Taylor Lane will support me.
Q: What tips would you give to people considering a role in one of our factories?
You’ve got to be practical. It’s not just enough to know the process, it’s hands-on too. It’s a safe working environment, aided by modern technology and machinery, but it’s still a physical role. It has its benefits though – I work on the afternoon shift which means I only work four days a week, with no weekends!
